What are alternative comic books, and more importantly, why should you even be paying attention to them?

Alternative comic booms first made their appearance in the 1980s following the establishment of “underground” comics. This form of comic book is by definition the polar opposite of mainstream, superhero type, comic books. This refers to not only the design and creation of the books but also the plot, storyline and even the distribution of them.

In case it hasn’t been made obvious, the world of alternative comic books is quite secluded in comparison to that of mainstream comics. This elite group does not access to the same wealth of resources as it’s more established counterpart which can make it difficult for them to prepare the comic books for distribution. As a result, we are unable to access their creations.
